Geodes seem to never fail in capturing attention. Even if you’re not a geode collector, just happening upon one in either a museum or curio shop will make you stop for a second to gaze at the shimmering wealth of crystals within.
Geodes are fairly common geological formations that occur when a cavity exists within layers of rocks. The cavity acts as sort of a mini cave into which mineral deposits creep in over eons to create the hidden gems within the geode.
Certain regions of the world have higher concentrations of geodes due to their unique geological structure. Places known for their geodes are Brazil, Namibia, and Mexico and even the United States has locations that commonly yield geodes. The states of Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, and Utah are particularly rich with geodes.
The most common crystals found inside of geodes is quartz, but they can also contain amethyst crystals, agate, chalcedony, jasper, calcite, dolomite, and celestite. The inside of geodes can either appear hollowed out our completely solid depending on the type of rock that produced it. Sometimes geodes are artificially colored to make them more eye-catching, but be wary of such adulterated rocks as true geode collectors only seek out geodes of the purist kind.
