Dresden Porcelain got its start under intense secrecy, competition, and espionage. The desire to break away from Asia as the sole supplier of fine china, drove the Prince of Saxony Germany to both desperate and ruthless means to secure his own domestic source of porcelain. A goldsmith that he was holding captive eventually came up with a recipe for producing porcelain of the highest quality. In 1710 the prince opened up a porcelain factory in Albrechtsburg castle in Meissen, Germany.
So protective of his porcelain manufacturing process that the prince held the workers prisoner in the castle that housed the factory. However, the secret couldn’t be kept for very long and in 1720 other porcelain makers sprang up in Vienna and Venice. In order to distinguish its porcelain from the others, Dresden porcelain was marked with Saxon crossed swords on the underside in blue glaze.
The Dresden porcelain line originally consisted of dining pieces and sets. Eventually it was expanded to include candle sticks, figurines, vases, and music vases. In 1872 the city of Dresden built its own factory in order to stake its own claim in the porcelain industry. These pieces bear a blue crown mark to distinguish it from the Meissen pieces. German porcelain, and Dresden porcelain in particular, are highly sought after even today for their beauty as well as their stately elegance.
